Summary: Tom Robinson was accused of rape, a very serious capital offense in the state of Alabama. The trial begins the next day with heaps of people from Maycomb County coming to spectate. Everyone is watching, even Mr Dolphus Raymond, who is a wealthy man who owns land on the county line and river bank, who is associated with a black woman and has mulatto children. Ms Maudie was the only one who said that watching someone on trial for his life is like attending a roman carnival. The massive crowd has to eat at the town square to eat their lunch. Later on, Jem, Dill, and Scout wait until everyone has cleared and left to the courthouse. The reason why is so that they could slip into the court house from the back unnoticed by Atticus, and watch the event. They were too late to get a good seat and so they had to sit with Reverend Skyes in the coloured seats. The coloured seats were in the balcony which made it harder for the people to see, hence why the black population had to sit there. They could see the whole courtroom from that view and they saw Judge Taylor, a white-haired old man who had a reputation of running his court in an improper fashion.
